Standards 4-5

While classroom material changes everyday due to evolving technologies and conflicting perceptions on what the future generations should learn in the classroom. Further, content education is crucial for teachers because it forms the foundation of what they teach, enabling them to effectively impart knowledge and skills to students. By understanding the content deeply, it allows teachers to create meaningful and engaging learning experiences that cater to the diverse needs of their students. It also enables them to address misconceptions, make connections between different concepts, and apply innovative teaching strategies. Notably, standard four focuses on the teacher's deep understanding and mastery of the content they teach, which is mainly aligned with the Common Core and New Jersey Core Curriculum Standards. Mainly, It emphasizes the importance of presenting content in various ways to cater to the different learning styles by engaging students in critical thinking and analysis from diverse perspectives. However, teachers during this time is also incorporating discipline for their students so that they stay on task and focused on the material. Additionally, standard four highlights the need for teachers to recognize and address student misconceptions, make connections to prior knowledge, and use resources effectively, including technology and supplementary materials, to enhance the student’s learning process.

Within standard five, it extends this understanding to the application of content (as talked about in standard four) by emphasizing the teacher's ability to connect concepts and perspectives while fostering critical thinking, creativity, and collaborative problem-solving in real-world contexts. Furthermore, it requires teachers to develop projects that analyzes complex issues using interdisciplinary perspectives. Also, teachers are expected to engage with students in applying knowledge to real-world problems and facilitate the use of current tools and resources. Moreover, it emphasizes the importance of developing communication skills, generating and evaluating new ideas, but more importantly, promoting diverse social and cultural perspectives. Ultimately, this standard is crucial as it prepares students to navigate the complexities of the modern world by encouraging students to think innovatively, communicate effectively, and develop a deep understanding of local and global issues. Through this standard being practiced in the classroom, students are not only just well-rounded students but also, global citizens. Overall, content education and application of content is essential for teachers to be effective educators, empowering them to inspire and guide students towards academic success and a deeper understanding of the world around them.

Standard 4, Content Knowledge:

Within standard four its critical role focuses on content knowledge for 21st-century teachers by emphasizing their understanding of key concepts, inquiry methods, and curriculum standards. Mainly, It requires teachers to create learning experiences that are accessible and meaningful that ensures students are mastering the content. Further, I feel this standard encourages teachers to use diverse representations and explanations by engaging students in questioning and analyzing ideas. However, it also asks students to apply inquiry methods and standards of evidence to their learning. Additionally, teachers are also expected to stimulate reflections, address misconceptions, and modify instructional resources to enhance learning. From my perspective, essential knowledge includes understanding major concepts that guides students to use academic language effectively while integrating culturally relevant content. Also, teachers should have an awareness of student standards and their progressions as they work through the lesson. Moreover, teachers are urged to understand that the content is complex and ever-evolving but also showcase an appreciation for multiple perspectives, address any bias's and be committed to each student's mastery of content. Overall, this standard highlights the dynamic and multifaceted nature of content knowledge in education by emphasizing its importance in fostering critical thinking, cultural understanding, and developing real-world connections for students.

When it comes to showcasing this domain, there was an instrumental lesson I created in my secondary methods course that emphasized many of these principals. With my content focused around English, I have come to realize that there are multiple principals involved with it, aside from just reading and writing. Mainly, I have realized based off my subbing experience that verbal communication is key to developing well-rounded learners. Within my course, we were asked to develop an array of lesson plans for our eventual unit plan that would be presented for the final grade. Moreover, I developed a lesson plan that focused on expanding persuasive language and communication skills through visual media. Mainly, students were asked to work through a range of activities based on persuasive language that would later result in them creating a visual graphic and constructing a persuasive text that showcases their understanding. Further, students worked through the following activities to help develop their content knowledge for a later assessment:

  • Anticipatory Set - Teacher will have pre-hung five posters of past fast food campaigns across the room and will instruct students to take three post-its to write an aspect of the poster that they find convincing in the poster. Teacher should remind students that convincing elements could include; color, shape, design, words, images, etc. When all the students are done, teachers should address students to take a seat and once they are sitting, teacher should talk about the two most favored posters and speak with the class on why they are so persuasive and compelling. (5 Minutes)

  • Drawing Upon Prior Knowledge - Teacher will present students with the “Power of Persuasion” PowerPoint and go over how applicable persuasive language is relevant today. Teacher will highlight how effective persuasive communication is in today’s society and it’s importance for being taught today. Further, teacher should connect how the previous lessons principles can act as guidelines for meaningful persuasive projects. (5 Minutes)

  • Direct Teaching - After connecting the relevancy of persuasive language to today’s world, teacher should continue to work through the PowerPoint slides, it focuses on the key elements of persuasive communication. Before the teacher begins, they should out the guided note sheet for students to fill out as they go along. As students reach the blanks, teacher should emphasize what those blanks are so students are following the pace of class. Teacher should follow-up each slide with some rhetorical questions to keep students engaged. (10 Minutes

  • Modeling - Teacher should instruct students to work with a student near them (groups of two) and have them take the time to show persuasive language through wordplay. One student from the group will get a random object from the front of room and they will take turns convincing each other to purchase each object. Teacher should encourage students to involve elements from the previous lesson such as tone and body language to make their pitch's convincing to each other. Also, teacher should be walking around during this time to make sure students are on-task with their work. (5 Minutes)

  • Guided Practice - Through using a random group generator, students will be divided randomly into groups of two to work together on a project. Students will be instructed to create an ad/graphic similar to ones they observed earlier in class through developing one on Canva. In this project students should showcase one food item of their choice and write a brief persuasive text (similar to an ad) on the index card that is given to them that says why any person should want to eat this item. Encourage students to use any colors or templates on Canva while encouraging them to be unique with their work. When students are done, they should upload the graphic to Google Classroom and the index card to the teacher. Students may complete the graphic for homework if they don’t complete it in class. (10 Minutes)

As standard four emphasizes the teacher's understanding and application of key comprehension concepts, inquiry methods, and curriculum standards, these characteristics were shown in this lesson plan. Mainly, I wanted to create an immersive learning experience that would resonate with students by ensuring a deep comprehension of persuasive language. The lesson employed a variety of teaching approaches, such as diverse teaching methods to engage students in questioning and analyzing persuasive language from various perspectives. By fostering curiosity and using key literary principles, I guided students in critical exploration of their language possibilities. The lesson encouraged students to work effectively with students through using 21st century ideas and activities. Students were asked to employ academic language based on the direct teaching for their eventual assessment. However, students were also asked to use technology to participate in the lesson, allowing them to showcase their creativity. Many of the aspects focused on in this lesson is essential as these learners continue to mature in life and skill they will later take for bigger assessments. Ultimately, this standard underscores the crucial role of content knowledge in cultivating critical thinking skills, cultural appreciation, and real-world connections within the realm of literature.

Standard 5, Application of Content:

When it comes to showcasing this standard of applying content, I had an opportunity in my clinical practice to blend their knowledge of both humanities and English to showcase a presentation. However, I had the opportunity prior to presentation to teach students public speaking skills that they would later incorporate into their presentation. Further, students were tasked with giving a presentation that explained a Martin Luther King speech (assigned randomly), but needed the necessary speaking skills and writing abilities in order to develop the presentation. After students were given the rubric for the presentation, they spent two class periods developing their slideshows and included all necessary aspects such as; the background on the speech, significance of the speech, explaining a quote from the speech, and reviewing any uncommon vocabulary terms from the speech. The day prior to the due date, I gave students a lesson on public speaking skills, which allowed the learners in the classroom to have a greater amount of confidence in presenting their projects to the class. Within this lesson, students were able to take the lessons they learned and apply for the future as well as other classes. Mainly, students after this lesson realized how applicable this lesson is for real life and why they would need it in the future, aside from school. Through incorporating MLK speeches, students were able to use them as reference for what a strong speech and speaker looks like and one they should try to resemble in the future. Also, students working together to complete this presentation allowed them to work on their collaboration and creativity skills. While many of the speeches were taken from difficult periods of American history, students could use their comprehension skills to understand it’s importance for today’s society.

Within standard five, it highlights the teacher's role in connecting academic concepts to real-world issues, fostering critical thinking, creativity, and collaborative problem-solving in students. Mainly, an emphasis on this standard allows students to be prepared for for the future while developing their skills for the present. For the 21st-century classroom, this means teachers should design projects that encourage students to analyze complex issues using perspectives from various disciplines that promote interdisciplinary learning. Mainly, teachers should engage students in applying their knowledge to real-world problems, fostering innovation and global citizenship. Moreover, teachers use current tools and resources to develop communication skills while encouraging the generation and evaluation of new ideas. However, essential to this standard is the teacher's understanding of how different disciplines approach inquiry, as well as their ability to integrate interdisciplinary themes into meaningful learning experiences. By fostering these skills, teachers prepare students to address local and global challenges with diverse perspectives and innovative solutions, making learning more relevant and impactful in the modern world.
